Related: The Son of Man
The Son of David is a title of the promised Messiah, according to:
- the Davidic covenant (2 Samuel 7:12-13),
- the prophetic scriptures that speak of Him; e.g. “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots” (Isa. 11:1),
- and the statement over the royal lineage of Christ, descending from David (Matt. 1:1).
The fact that the Messiah was the son of David was widely accepted by every honest Jew (Matt. 9:27; Matt. 12:23; Matt. 15:22; Matt. 20:30-31; Matt. 21:9, 15). The title “son of David” is used of Christ more in Matthew than in any other gospel. In Matt. 22, the Lord questions the Pharisees about the son of David, bringing out that He was not only David’s son (human), but also David’s Lord (Divine).
