Psalm 149

Psalm 149
Israel Called to Praise Jehovah as King and Judge of the Earth

Psalm 149. In this Psalm we have Israel called on the praise Jehovah as King and judge of the earth. This is Millennial praise, which will be offered by the restored nation of Israel in the reign of Christ. We find that Israel will have a priestly role and an administrative role, in which they will have delegated authority to execute judgment on the nations.

PSALM 149
1 Hallelujah! Sing unto Jehovah a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the godly.
2 Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the sons of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance; let them sing psalms unto him with the tambour and harp.
4 For Jehovah taketh pleasure in his people; he beautifieth the meek with salvation.

vv.1-4 Israel’s New Song. We have Israel singing a new song of praise to Jehovah. The theme is praise to Jehovah as the Maker of Israel, the King of Israel, and the Redeemer of Israel.

5 Let the godly exult in glory; let them shout for joy upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of GOD be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand:
7 To execute vengeance against the nations, and punishment among the peoples;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written. This honour have all his saints. Hallelujah!

vv.5-9 God Praised for His Judgment. Israel, now “the godly”, praise God while they take the place of administrators of His judgment on earth. They are functioning as a kingdom of priests, with both a priestly role and an administrative role; hence “the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand”. Israel will have delegated authority from God to “execute vengeance against the nations, and punishment among the peoples”, etc. This “honor” is given to Israel as the earthly saints of God.
