Psalm 121
Jehovah as the Creator and Keeper of Israel
Jehovah as the Creator and Keeper of Israel
Psalm 121. In this Psalm we have the faith of Israel in Jehovah as the Creator and as the Keeper of Israel. Prophetically, this gives us the expressions of the awakened tribes of Israel as they turn to Jehovah for help. They are confident that Jehovah will help them return home.
PSALM 121
A Song of degrees.
1 I lift up mine eyes unto the mountains: whence shall my help come?
2 My help cometh from Jehovah, who made the heavens and the earth.
vv.1-2 The Only Source of Help. The faithful of Israel realize that there is only one source of help; “My help cometh from Jehovah, who made the heavens and the earth”. The hills or mountains would be the established political powers of the earth, which cannot help. “Truly in vain is salvation looked for from the hills, and the multitude of mountains; truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel” (Jer. 3:23). This also shows a complete turning away from idolatry, the old sin of Israel.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
vv.3-4 A Watchful Protector. Jehovah will be a watchful protector for Israel, neither slumbering nor sleeping.
5 Jehovah is thy keeper, Jehovah is thy shade upon thy right hand;
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 Jehovah will keep thee from all evil; he will keep thy soul.
8 Jehovah will keep thy going out and thy coming in, from henceforth and for evermore.
vv.5-8 Preservation from All Evil. The Lord will watch over the returning tribes of Israel, protecting them from every kind of evil, both physical and moral. When know from other scriptures that this will be accomplished through the ministry of angels; “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (Matt. 24:31).
