Psalm 126

Psalm 126
Israel’s Joy in Considering Their Return

Psalm 126. This Psalm gives us the rejoicing of Israel in anticipation of their restoration as an nation, in their return to the land. It views the turning of the captivity of Zion (past) as the signal of God’s intention to return Israel to their land (present). At this point we have the full restoration of Israel to their land!

PSALM 126
A Song of degrees.
1 When Jehovah turned the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.
2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing: then said they among the nations, Jehovah hath done great things for them.
3 Jehovah hath done great things for us; and we are joyful.

vv.1-3 Reflecting on Past Recovery. Israel reflects on the tuning of the captivity of Zion in the past, full of joy in considering Jehovah’s goodness to them. This is an incredible description of joy!

4 Turn our captivity, O Jehovah, as the streams in the south.
5 They that sow in tears shall reap with rejoicing:
6 He goeth forth and weepeth, bearing seed for scattering; he cometh again with rejoicing, bearing his sheaves.

vv.4-6 The Harvest of Israel. Israel calls on Jehovah to return them to their land, in increasing numbers like the ever widening “streams of the south”. Those who carry the gospel of the kingdom to the ten tribes, “He goeth forth and weepeth, bearing seed for scattering”, will find their efforts richly rewarded; “he cometh again with rejoicing, bearing his sheaves”. The Lord who wept over Jerusalem is associated with those messengers, and as the great Sower, He will bring in a rich harvest!
