Psalm 123

Psalm 123
Israel Dependent on Jehovah

Psalm 123. This Psalm gives us the expressions of Israel in a time of trial, lifting up their eyes to Jehovah in entire dependence on Him.

PSALM 123
A Song of degrees.
1 Unto thee do I lift up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are directed to Jehovah our God, until he be gracious unto us.
3 Be gracious unto us, O Jehovah, be gracious unto us; for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.

vv.1-4 Dependence on Jehovah. In the previous Psalm Israel first lifted their eyes to the hills, but in this Psalm they immediately lift their eyes to Jehovah, who “dwellest in the heavens”. They have been brought to the point of full dependence; “as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are directed to Jehovah our God”. They cry out to Jehovah for deliverance, expressing sorrow at being scorned by the proud around them. Prophetically this might reflect the persecution that the returning ten tribes will experience from the nations they pass through.
