Psalm 122

Psalm 122
The Position of Jerusalem in the Hearts of Israel

Psalm 122. In this Psalm of David we have the tribes of Israel brought back into association with Jerusalem. The returning ten tribes long for the house of the Lord and the gates of Jerusalem! This Psalm gives us the longing of the ten tribes to return to their ancient homeland.

PSALM 122
A Song of degrees. Of David.
1 I rejoiced when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of Jehovah.
2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

vv.1-2 The Blessedness of Returning to Jerusalem. The tribes of Israel look forward to the time when they will first go into the house of the Lord, and also stand within the gates of Jerusalem! They meet up with one another, and grow in numbers; “I”, “they”, and “us”.

3 Jerusalem, which art built as a city that is compact together,
4 Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of Jah, a testimony to Israel, to give thanks unto the name of Jehovah.
5 For there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

vv.3-5 The Rebuild City of Jerusalem. Israel speaks of the beloved city as built again. The tribes of Israel will go up to give thanks to Jehovah their God, and this will be a public testimony to Israel. It is there, in the city of Jerusalem, that the earthly extension of Jehovah’s government will be centered. The ten tribes have no quarrel with the royal line of David, showing that the old division will be healed; “there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David”.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
7 Peace be within thy bulwarks, prosperity within thy palaces.
8 For my brethren and companions’ sakes I will say, Peace be within thee!
9 Because of the house of Jehovah our God I will seek thy good.

vv.6-9 The Peace of Jerusalem. In the final section of this Psalm, Israel calls on the earth to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those nations who love Jerusalem will prosper in the righteous government of Jehovah.
