Psalm 124

Psalm 124
Israel’s Praise of Jehovah for His Deliverance

Psalm 124. In this Psalm of David we have the praise and thanks of restored Israel to Jehovah for His deliverance. The great enemy in this Psalm would likely be the confederacy of Gog and Magog, which will come against Israel when they are restored in their land.

PSALM 124
A Song of degrees. Of David.
1 If it had not been Jehovah who was for us — oh let Israel say —
2 If it had not been Jehovah who was for us, when men rose up against us,
3 Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, a torrent had gone over our soul;
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be Jehovah, who gave us not up a prey to their teeth!
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of Jehovah, the maker of heavens and earth.

vv.1-8 Israel’s Praise of Jehovah for His Deliverance. Restored Israel recognizes that they owe their salvation entirely to Jehovah, and they call on themselves to confess it in prayer. They speak of men in opposition to them, like a huge wave rising up against them, threatening to swallow them alive. If it had not been for Jehovah fighting for Israel, the waters would have overwhelmed them. They bless Jehovah for delivering them like “a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we have escaped”. They ascribe all praise for this deliverance to Jehovah their God, the “maker of heavens and earth”.
