Psalm 146
Israel Praises Jehovah as Creator and Sustainer of All, and Israel’s Great Deliverer
Israel Praises Jehovah as Creator and Sustainer of All, and Israel’s Great Deliverer
Psalm 146. The last five Psalms are called the “Great Hallel”, and they give us the crescendo of praise to Jehovah from restored Israel in the Millennium. All of them are double-Hallelujah Psalms. These are also orphan Psalms, which mean they were probably written by the same author as the previous Psalm; i.e. by David who wrote Psalm 145. In Psalm 146 they praise Jehovah as Creator and Sustainer of all, and as Israel’s great Deliverer.
PSALM 146
1 Hallelujah! Praise Jehovah, O my soul.
2 As long as I live will I praise Jehovah; I will sing psalms unto my God while I have my being.
3 Put not confidence in nobles, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his purposes perish.
5 Blessed is he who hath the GOD of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Jehovah his God,
6 Who made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is therein; who keepeth truth for ever;
7a Who executeth judgment for the oppressed, who giveth bread to the hungry.
vv.1-7a Jehovah the Creator in Contrast with Nobles. Israel praises Jehovah for His delivering power, in contrast with trusting nobles. Men are weak, and their purposes come to nothing. But Jehovah has made the heavens, the earth, the sea, etc. He is capable of judgment and deliverance.
7b Jehovah looseth the prisoners;
8 Jehovah openeth the eyes of the blind; Jehovah raiseth up them that are bowed down; Jehovah loveth the righteous;
9 Jehovah preserveth the strangers; he lifteth up the fatherless and the widow; but the way of the wicked doth he subvert.
10 Jehovah will reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, from generation to generation. Halleluiah!
vv.7b-10 Jehovah the Great Deliverer. What has Jehovah done with His great power? He has used it to loose the prisoners, open the eyes of the blind, etc. This refers to the deliverance of Israel under various figures. Jehovah will reign forever in Zion!
